Wines for a changeable British Summer? Say hello to our guest blogger Helen aka @knackeredmutha who sums up her wines of choice. Thanks Helen!
Damp Patch. Yup, we’ve been in one alright. The sun kept trying to make an appearance but by the time I’d swapped my jumper for a t-shirt and located my sunglasses it changed its mind before I’d even made it to the garden. But, ever the optimist, the fridge door has been well stocked with summery whites and the rack has a couple of barbeque-friendly reds in it. It’s all about PMA. That’s Positive Mental Attitude, not Pretty Miserable. Again. Blue skies here today though; better late than never. Here’s what’s helping my sunny disposition:
Vermentino 2011 Poggioargentiera
Such a brilliant wine, made from the utterly delicious Vermentino grape grown in the Maremma region in southern Tuscany. This is a peachy queen, with the freshness and zip of limes. If you are bored with the usual suspects, grape-wise, give Vermentino a go and if you don’t like it, I’ll finish it off.
Villa Maria Cellar Selection Pinot Noir 2009
Pinot Noir is an expensive habit but, then again, so is waxing. This is made by one of NZ’s biggest producers, proving that big can indeed be beautiful. Made from a blend of Awatere and Wairau Valley fruit, this has been aged in oak. The result? A smooth, seductive number with bramble fruit and a touch of smokiness. Plays a blinder with barbequed sausages or spicy chicken wings.
La Garnacha Salvaje del Moncayo 2010
A friend told me about this one (I say told, he posted about it on facebook) and even though the status update was effusive I knew it was not just because he’d drunk it all but because the wine really was good. And so it is, made from the Garnacha (same as Grenache) grape in northern Spain. It’s a colour pop of a wine, all juicy black fruits. So fresh, it would wink at you if it could. Put it with Hugh Fearnley-Whatnot’s Pork ‘Donnie Brasco’ if at all possible.
Helen blogs at www.knackeredmotherswineclub.blogspot.com. Her first book, The Knackered Mother’s Wine Club – everything you’ve ever needed to know about wine and much more – is out in February 2013.
